here is a reason why the YMCA is referred to
as "America's Favorite Swim Instructor". In YMCA classes, not
only are children taught in a caring way how to swim but they also
learn about safety and rescue skills while building character
development values; caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Parent-Child Lessons-
For children 6 to 36
months and their parent. Our safety based program
encourages both the parent and child to have fun in the water
while the parent helps their child to learn aquatic skills and
games that use basic movement in the water such as kicking, arm
strokes and breath control. Classes are available in the
morning, afternoon, evenings and also Saturday mornings.
Preschool (ages 3 - kindergarten, and/or 6 years
of age)-
This program offers
children their first experience in the pool without parental
assistance. The children are taught the basic skills that are
the building blocks of swimming. They also learn about pool
safety, boating safety and floatation devices.
Pike:
For new swimmers, teaching basic paddle stroke and
kicking skills, pool safety and comfort with holding their faces
in the water while blowing bubbles.
Eel:
For children who are comfortable in the water. They are
taught to kick, dive, float and perform the progressive paddle
stroke.
Ray:
At this level children improve stroke skills, learn
more personal safety and rescue skills, build endurance by
swimming on their front and back.
Starfish:
Continued work on side breathing and stroke
development.
School Age (6 years of age and/or in grade 1
- grade 6)-
Youth program comprises
five main components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke
development, water sports, and games. Each level builds upon the
preceding level.
Polliwog:
Beginning level, will learn a variety of paddle
strokes, kicking skills and learn personal safety and rescue
skills.
Guppy:
Beginning level II, stroke development, front and back,
rudimentary breathing, jumping into deep water, learn to tread
water and rescue skills.
Minnow:
Advanced Beginner level, Front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke,
introduction to breaststroke and sidestroke.
Fish:
Intermediate level,
Front crawl with open turns, breaststroke, advanced backstroke
with open turns, introduction to butterfly stroke.
Flying Fish:
Advanced Intermediate level, refining all strokes in
their proper sequence. Introduce personal safety and rescue
skills, water polo and synchronized skills.
Shark:
Advanced level, swim the individual medley,
trudgen crawl and inverted breaststroke.
Junior High Swim Lessons (7th - 9th Grade)-
Lessons for the non-swimmer through intermediate level swimmer. Work at your
own pace, basic through advanced skills will be taught. Class is a balance of
both group and individual work.
Adult & High School
Lessons (10th grade and up)-
Lessons for the non-swimmer through intermediate level swimmer. Work at your
own pace, basic through advanced skills will be taught. Class is a balance
of both group and individual work.
