Our Role in the Community
By building partnerships with local schools, businesses and organizations, the
YMCA is
able to serve our community. The helps to develop positive values,
morals and ethics. It is our
belief that these are the building blocks for a
strong individual, a strong family and ultimately
a strong community.
Our Mission Statement
We serve all ages and faiths in our
community
to build
spirit, mind and body
Our History
The YMCA of Superior California was formed in 1866 by returning Civil War
veterans. The first YMCA building was at Fifth and J Streets. This facility was
used from 1899 until construction began on a five-story building at the same
site in 1913. The downtown YMCA relocated to twenty-first and W street in 1951
and became the Central Family YMCA. In 1959, the YMCA added the Northeast Family
YMCA, located on Eastern Avenue. Currently, the YMCA is expanding into South
Placer County, Elk Grove, and El Dorado County. The programs offered by the YMCA
are far different today from 20, 40, and 100 years ago. What remains constant,
though, is the Y's ability to adapt to society's changing needs and to keep
developing programs which meet those needs.
