Before there were public schools in the United States, most early YMCA's cared for children of the poor through free Sunday schools and mission schools. In 1856, the San Francisco YMCA enrolled 44 boys and 3 girls in a Sunday school for "newsboys," kids who sold newspapers on the streets. The Washington D.C., YMCA held "day-schools" for poor children. And in Salem, Mass., the YMCA's mission school offered classes and "social gatherings" for children who otherwise might not have had such opportunities.
